Wheelset development at AC Schnitzer
A few definitions first

Philosophy/Design: Wheels establish a connection between a car and the road, not only physically but also visually. "That's why the correct proportions of the rims to the body are so important," explains AC Schnitzer Chief Designer Michele Viandante. "Rims that are too small can quickly make a vehicle appear high-legged and unstable." The AC3 Flowforming rims achieve what initially seems contradictory: weight reduction combined with increased wheel diameters. The AC3 Flowforming rims measure 9 or 10 x 21 inches and are available in two color options: BiColor Silver/Anthracite or matte anthracite. Visually, the rims are clearly part of the AC3 rim family and complement the portfolio in terms of sizes, applications, and manufacturing processes. The reduced weight of the AC3 Flowforming rims lowers the vehicle's unsprung mass by approximately 10 kg, thereby also reducing its CO2 emissions. At the same time, there is a noticeable improvement in driving dynamics, as the gyroscopic forces on the axles are reduced by approximately four times – a perceived reduction of 40 kg. The AC Schnitzer AC3 flow-formed wheels therefore offer real advantages: for the driver and the environment.

Only high-quality aluminum alloys are used. The material undergoes additional heat treatment during the production process, resulting in increased strength and reduced weight. Material samples taken during the manufacturing process ensure the consistently high quality of the material.

Flow forming is one of the most advanced manufacturing technologies in the wheel industry. In this production process, after the initial aluminum casting, the raw product is further processed by rolling. This step serves to compact the metal, guaranteeing greater stability and impact resistance of the rim. Furthermore, the improved stability allows for even more intricate rim designs, as the wall thicknesses can be significantly thinner compared to conventionally manufactured rims. And this is measurable: compared, for example, to the BMW forged "Double Spoke 706 M" rim for the M5, which at 10.5J x 20" is even one inch smaller than the new AC3 flow-formed rims, these are 2.4 kg or 2.5 kg lighter than the BMW rim.

BiColor surface
In this process, the wheel is first primed and then completely painted. Next, the surfaces that will later have a bright, metallic sheen are machined. Finally, a two-coat clear coat is applied, consisting of a polyester primer and an acrylic clear coat.

Testing procedures / Safety
After their design, the first sample rims are manufactured under real production conditions. These must undergo a multitude of tests. Among other things, their strength is tested. The bending test simulates the "rim lifespan." Every AC Schnitzer rim must survive this lifespan unscathed in order to be produced and sold. Vehicle-specific tests, including test installations with clearance measurements and driving tests on public roads and racetracks, follow. Only after these procedures do our rims receive homologation, i.e., approval for use on public roads. Wheels are safety-critical components. Therefore, they are inspected and tested with the utmost care. This begins with initial chemical material tests and concludes with rigorous endurance tests on test machines: - §30 StVZO wheel guidelines - ECE R124 - Bending tests - 90° impact test - Rolling tests
