DESCRIPTION

Wheelset development at AC Schnitzer
A few definitions first

Wheel/Complete wheel = Rim including tire Wheelset = 4 wheels xi/xd Wheelsets = special wheelsets for all-wheel drive vehicles (xDrive) Mixed tires = Tires wider on the rear axle than on the front axle All-round tires = Tires the same on the front and rear axle
The wheels play a truly vital and therefore important role: they are the postcard-sized connection between the vehicle and the road. They are largely responsible for the acceleration and propulsion, as well as for the deceleration – i.e., braking – of your vehicle. The wheels therefore play a key role. Anyone who develops and sells wheels bears a great responsibility. We are aware of this responsibility; we have internalized it and implement it in every new development. At AC Schnitzer, we only use high-quality brand-name tires, developed in close cooperation with premium tire manufacturers. On the one hand, the tires must perfectly transfer the engine's power to the road; on the other hand, properties such as braking performance, lateral stability, water drainage in the rain, and straight-line stability are important decision criteria for or against a tire. A set of wide-base tires is always an investment in increased driving safety and dynamics. To maintain driving comfort when using larger wheel dimensions, we at AC Schnitzer have actively opted against run-flat tires and opted for sporty, conventional tires. Conventional tires create less rolling resistance and offer noticeably more comfort. AC Schnitzer specializes in mixed tire configurations, meaning wheel sets where the rear wheels are wider than the front wheels. This makes sense in terms of driving dynamics, as it allows for the transfer of strong drive forces while simultaneously enabling high steering precision. While the wider a tire, the more power you can deliver to the road, the rolling resistance caused by the tire must not be too great. Since this increases with the wider a tire, AC Schnitzer develops balanced wheel dimensions. AC Schnitzer develops special wheel/tire combinations for all-wheel drive vehicles, orienting themselves in these combinations to the vehicle manufacturer's specifications. You can recognize these AC Schnitzer wheel sets by the "xi/xd" designation. Only those wheel dimensions are developed and approved for all-wheel drive vehicles that are just as gentle on the transfer case as standard wheel sets. All AC Schnitzer wheel sets are tuned in multi-stage driving tests on the road and on race tracks. The wheels are only released for sale after successful testing. All AC Schnitzer wheel sets are delivered fully assembled and balanced. They are covered by a two-year manufacturer's warranty. The scope of delivery includes mounting materials such as adapters and wheel bolts, as well as the parts certificate (except for wheel sets marked for export).

Philosophy/Design
State-of-the-art rim technology: AC Schnitzer Type VIII lightweight forged wheels. This generation of wheels, developed specifically for the sporty BMW models, demonstrates what appears to be a contradiction in terms: reduced weight while maintaining the same large wheel diameters and widths. AC Schnitzer engineers and designers achieved this feat in cooperation with the legendary wheel manufacturer FUCHS. Compared to the BMW series counterparts (e.g., Performance Double Spoke 269), they save 4.2 kg per wheel. This leads to a 33.6% reduction in centrifugal forces at the axles, resulting in noticeably improved cornering handling and simultaneously increased driving pleasure. Roman Fenners, responsible for development at AC Schnitzer, describes the different driving experience as follows: "16.8 kg less unsprung mass on the car is an incredible amount. The car's handling immediately improves significantly. With 16.8 kg rotating on the axles, the weight feels four times heavier, depending on the speed. In terms of driving dynamics, we've saved a whopping 67 kg with the AC Schnitzer Type VIII lightweight forged wheels. And that's sensational." Due to the special material structure, the design of the Type VIII lightweight forged wheels has become slimmer than the other members of the Type VIII wheel series. - High-quality lightweight forged wheels save up to 25-35% in weight compared to conventional cast wheels - Noticeable reduction of unsprung masses and gyroscopic forces on the car, resulting in - significantly increased driving dynamics - Significantly improved acceleration and deceleration due to lower masses - Improved cornering - Integrated "Forged" logo - Integrated AC Schnitzer logo - High-quality clear coat to protect the wheel against corrosion, resulting in - a long service life - Open design in anthracite/silver

material
Around 97 percent of the melt consists of aluminum, but the remaining three percent of the wrought alloy also plays a role in influencing the desired material properties for the ideal wheel. In addition to the main component, aluminum, the alloy also contains one percent each of magnesium and titanium (which ensures finer grain). The precise composition of the material alloy has a significant influence on the final properties of the wheel. Pure aluminum Around 97 percent of the alloy consists of pure aluminum. The remaining three percent of the wrought alloy is important for the material's properties. Chromium The master alloy AlCr20, which contains the hard metal chromium, improves recrystallization resistance. Master alloy is a mixture of aluminum with other substances; in this case, it is a maximum of 0.25 percent by weight of chromium, which is a very small amount. Magnesium Magnesium, together with pure silicon, increases the strength of the overall alloy. The maximum proportion of these materials is 1.2 and 1.3 percent by weight, respectively. Titanium These shiny bars are the master alloy AlTi5B1. It serves to finer the grain structure of the overall alloy. The proportion of the expensive raw material titanium is only 0.1 percent by weight. Silicon: These irregularly shaped lumps are silicon, which is only added to the alloy together with magnesium. This increases the strength. The silicon content is between 0.7 and 1.3 percent by weight. Manganese: The addition of 0.4 to 1.0 percent manganese makes the alloy tougher. The manganese has a positive effect on recrystallization behavior.

production
Forging – a complex process that must ensure the highest levels of safety. In many steps, the wheel is prepared for its important role in ensuring a long vehicle life. This process guarantees excellent material properties, which are the reason for the low weight of our forged wheels. Forged wheels offer optimal safety for the occupants, even in critical driving situations.

Step 1: The nozzle
A cast block of over 6m in length, also manufactured at OTTO FUCHS, is the starting material from which a nozzle, which is precisely tailored to the later wheel, is sawn off.

Step 2: Pre-forging
In the first forging stage, the nozzle is pre-forged into a rotationally symmetrical blank with a force of 4,000 tons.

Step 3: Designing
In the second forming stage, the styling is pressed into the pre-forged blank under a 7,000 ton press, which largely gives the wheel its final appearance.

Step 4: Punching
In the final forging stage with 800 tons of press force, the future ventilation hole windows and the hub bore are punched out and the burr from excess material on the outer circumference is sheared off.

Step 5: Flow pressing
The outer edge of the blank is heated. The entire rim area, from the outer to the inner flange, is rolled out – this is precisely what makes a Fuchsfelge®.

Step 6: Finishing
The final step involves finishing: turning, drilling, and deburring. Painting completes this complex process. Source: Material and production: Otto Fuchs KG

BiColor Anthracite/Silver surface
In this process, the wheel is first primed and then completely painted. The surfaces that will later have a metallic luster are then turned and polished to a high gloss. Finally, a two-coat clear coat is applied, consisting of a polyester primer and an acrylic clear coat.

Test procedures / safety
After their design, the first sample rims are manufactured under real production conditions. These must undergo a multitude of tests. Among other things, their strength is tested. The bending test simulates the "rim lifespan." Every AC Schnitzer rim must survive this lifespan unscathed in order to be produced and sold. Vehicle-specific tests, including test installations with clearance measurements and driving tests on public roads and racetracks, follow. Only after these procedures do our rims receive homologation, i.e., approval for use on public roads. Wheels are safety-critical components. Therefore, they are inspected and tested with the utmost care. This begins with initial chemical material tests and concludes with rigorous endurance tests on test machines: - §30 StVZO wheel guidelines - ECE R124 - Bending tests - 90° impact test - Rolling tests
